New firstOld firstyou sure about that formula?
SnCl2 looks like this..
.. ....
:Cl:Sn:Cl:
˙˙‗‗‗‗ ˙˙
with a lone pair of electrons on the Sn. With SnlC3.. you'll need an exrta eletcron and will give the entire molecule a -1 charge.
After calcium, atomic number 20 it is too cumbersome to draw that many circles as the p orbitals hold 6 electrons and the d orbitals hold 10 electrons.
Quantum numebrs are easy to use and give much more inforamtion
Things have even been simpilfied for this! We find the inret gas that is in the next line beolw. For Sn it is Kr The desigantions would be as follows.{Kr} 5s2, 4d10, 5p2 This tells us that the outermost electrons are in the 5s2, and 5p2 orbitals. Which gives a valence of 2+ and 4+.
